Photographic Project: "I colori del Divin Pittore"
This Project was born in 2023 for the 500th anniversary from the death of the painter Pietro Vannucci, il Perugino.
Raffaelli Franci speaking:
"I've always been fascinated and enchanted by the beauty of the Italian Renaissance, of which Pietro di Cristoforo Vannucci, known as Perugino, was a leading figure.
Enchanted by his soft traits, the delicate grace and malinconia of his figures, the serene balance of his architecture and the landscapes scenarios.
Enchanted by the colours, sometimes bold, sometimes soft but always astonishing in their beauty. Incantata dai colori a volte marcati, a volte tenui ma sempre stupefacenti nella loro bellezza. The ultramarine blue, the greens of the Umbrian hills, the reds, the yellows, the blues and the black.
Enchanted by the “dolcezza dei colori unita” (sweetness of colours combined) as Vasari said.
The photographic project begins with the photo I take of the original works by Perugino, then there's a graphic elaboration to emphasize the colours of the “divin pittore”. From the perfect construction of the perspective and the depth of the landscapes, I created Swirles that start from a central point of escape to have a fluctuating dance of colours, sometimes leaving the depth of the landscapes painted in the original.
A tribute to the “meglio maestro d’Italia” (the greatest master of Italy), as the patron Agostino Chigi defined him.
"Raffaella Franci's mysterious and unsetting photographs appear as colourful swirles. The photographer penetrates the work of the Renaissance painter by photographing his works and then graphically transforming them into enigmatic swirling scenarios." Andrea Baffoni
