ARTIST
Gianni Berengo Gardin was born in Santa Margherita Ligure. He grew up and studied in Venice and he discovered his passion for photography in the early 50's. Since then he has never stopped taking pictures, building up a monumental photographic archive that can tell the story of the evolution of the Italian landscape and society from the post-war period to the present day.

From the outset, he focused his attention on a wide range of subjects: social issues, everyday life, the world of work, architecture and landscapes.

His photographic training took off thanks to Magnum, founded by Cartier Bresson and in the early 1960's he met Cornell Capa who gave him some books of photography. Since then Berengo Gardin has followed the footsteps of the great photographers working for "Magnum" and "Life", telling the story of society through the eyes of a socially committed craftsman.

Some of his works touched on sensitive issues for the Italian society. In the 30's he made Morire di Classe, a reportage on mental hospitals, which highlighted the battle Franco Basaglia was fighting at the time.
