ARTIST:
Paul Almasy was born in Budapest in 1907. At the age of 17, he left his home town and moved to Paris where he discovered his passion for photography. During the 30's and 40's he explored the classic themes for vintage photography: The river Senna, young lovers, childhood games, traps, the romantic life. In the 40's he started to travel around the world with his camera. The photograph "Discution", which we sell in our gallery, was taken during this period.
Although he portrayed poverty and misery, Almasy respected of what he saw, looking at it from a distance and portraying the life of a human being with delicacy. It's no coincidence that he called his vast photographic archive - more than 12.000 photographs - "The Archive of the World". In his black and white photographs Almasy always paid attention to the light and to the composition, creating exciting images, sometimes almost iconic ones.
Most of his photographs are exhibited at the museum of Contemporary Photography, the MuFoCo in Milan. You can buy one of his photographs depicting the Italian scene of the 60's, "Discution", in our Domi Gallery.
