ARTIST
Defined a fanatic of his job and, often, "problematic" by his editors, the photographer and photo-reporter W. Eugene Smith demanded such perfection from his images that he destroyed most of his early works. He began taking photographs at the age of 14, initially interested in aeroplanes and aeronautical engineering. Smith studied photography at the Notre Dame University and in 1937 began working for Newsweek from which he was fired for refusing to use a medium format camera. Smith loved the freedom of the smaller cameras. Later he was sent as war correspondent during WWII. Smith helped define photojournalism through his work at Life and Magnum Magazine. He is remembered as a teacher of technique and the obscure camera.
