Nel 1830 lo scienziato inglese Charles Wheatstone intuisce che due immagini dello stesso soggetto, in apparenza identiche ma catturate da due punti di vista distanti tra loro di circa 6 centimetri, se osservate con uno strumento idoneo restituivano all’osservatore un effetto tridimensionale: questo strumento si chiamava visore stereoscopico, e le ricerche di Wheatstone si applicarono prima a disegni e illustrazioni e poi, a partire dalla metà dell’800, alla fotografia.
